From serial killers to killer parasites, the scariest realities of our daily existence came to the forefront of Russian Baths’ 2019 debut album, Deepfake. The terror was palpable in decibel form in the Brooklyn duo of Luke Koz and Jess Rees’ mining of noise rock throughout that effort, but on new single “Done and Dead”, they seek out an eerie release to the suffering. Evolving white noise into a heavier (but not in loudness) form of emo and atmospheric rock, Russian Baths flip the American Football house into a haunted one and with the declaration that, ladies and gentleman, we are stuck in a space. “We only fall asleep / When we see its face,” Koz and Rees hollow out a quiet corner of darkness. “But its eyes are nothing / Body numb / So we light a match / Waiting to be done and dead.” If there is an escape from this late night paralysis, it’s through the mind’s own echo.
