Over the past five years and the throes of a pandemic since 2017′s acclaimed new wave pity party, After Laughter, Paramore have dimmed the lights and churned in the background. Hayley Williams used her time out to expunge emotionally across two great solo albums. Otherwise, she, Taylor York, and Zac Farro stayed at home like the rest us. “This Is Why”, the lead single and title track from the trio’s sixth studio album, sounds like the stir crazy in them finally getting out. Cooler heads protract artfully sharp into popified post-punk, but then retreat right back in upon realizing the world still sucks. “You say the coast is clear / But you won’t catch me out,” Williams sings. This is why the best dance parties still take place from the comfort of your home.
