“Digital World” is an appropriate song title coming out of BLACKSTARKIDS, the Gen-Z-aged Kansas City hip-hop trio of TheBabeGabe, TyFaizon, and Deiondre who are very much products of being raised on the Internet with a sound heavily fashioned on nostalgic style points from ‘90s alternative guitar rock they weren’t even alive for, and a pre-emptive millennial hip-hop resurgence for Odd Future and Brockhampton which they hyperaware of. Except this is also a revolt. A highlight from their just-dropped CYBERKISS* mixtape, this one leans more so on the latter with upbeat movements and swagged out rhymes. “Hope you doin’ good kid, I been buggin’ out / Kids goin’ crazy for the words that leave my mouth / See us on tour from the north to the south / Don’t keep it digital, come and let it out,” goes its chorus. While everyone seems to be living life through a screen, BLACKSTARKIDS offer up a call to be real anywhere but.
