Alvvays – “Very Online Guy” / “Belinda Says”

“Belinda Says” and “Very Online Guy” represent two complimentary yet respectively unique sides to Alvvays’ shape-shifting dream-pop sound, and further the anticipation toward what’s sounding like a creative peak for the Toronto band leading up to their third album, Blue Rev. In what’s become tradition across Alvvays’ discography, “Belinda Says” is emotional grandeur in kindred spirit to “Archie, Marry Me” and “In Undertow” with its surging sugar-static feedback swirling in color and perfect songwriting (”Belinda says heaven is a place on earth / Well, so is hell…”) “Very Online Guy”, on the other hand, is for the avant weirdos in need of a quip to their least favorite reply guy, with the quintet sculpting their lush textures around French avant pop and tongue. Whether they’re perfecting their own lane or veering further outside lines, there’s, er, always more surprises coming our way from them…
