“When it’s late at night and I don’t understand / Everything that’s happened to me / And my rotten mind is quietly tense / Like a deer underneath the apple tree / Just lay right here with me / Because I love you so much, my friend,” sings Julien Baker during her moving apparition on Wild Pink’s “Hold My Hand”, the second preview off the New York band’s fourth full-length effort, ILYSM. Even without her saintly silent presence, John Rees’ inverted musings against the rustic timbre would still carve out genuine comfort in in the dark. Sometimes we need someone to help keep the scaries at bay, though, and thank God for the ones who do the most simply by being there.
