Trollish or posturing inquisitively? That always seems to be the question with the arrival of a new album cycle by subversive pop rock architects the 1975. “Part of The Band”, the leadoff single from their new album Being Funny In A Foreign Language, lyrically ejaculates phrases like “my cancellation” and the line “I like my men like I like my coffee / Full of soy milk and so sweet it won’t offend anybody / Whilst staining the pages of The Nation” to just effect. It also marks the first instance the band co-produced a track with Jack Antonoff. You put the Matty Healy songwriting formula in a room with that dude, and you end up getting a very online fuckboi version of folklore that steps out into a Bon Iver concert crowd once the brass comes in. Japanese Breakfast helps her favorite band on this culture vulture soliloquy with backing vocals throughout that lets it be sweet despite its acid tongue.
