Five years removed since their excellent sophomore effort Antisocialites, the passage of time has only made it even more apparent that in a scene of many dream-pop bands, Alvvways do the energy differently. “Pharmacist”, the lead single from the band’s return, Blue Rev, found the Toronto quintet in the studio with producer Shawn Everett (the War On Drugs, Kacey Musgraves) who helps the melted electricity in their pop, spangle, and hook feel even more indiscernible to transcribe into word, though Molly Rankin always knows the emotion to carry the current over. “I want to wake up on the right side / Looking back / Getting out of neutral new track,” she sings. As always, Alvvays’s prescription for the heart bends and mends space and time with gazing wonder.
Alvvays’ Blue Rev will be released October 7th on Polyvinyl Records.
