The passion of Zola Jesus can be felt in every sound and particle of light moving through her art. It has also become her lifeline these last couple years where the end seems nigh for both the artist and human. ARKHON – her sixth studio effort and first album in five years since the cataclysmic standout Okavi – is the most new age album Nika Rosa Danilova has done yet in its spiritual meditations through music.
It is here where the nature goth discovers purpose through creation in a world that no longer acknowledges our existence. In a sense, it sounds like the other end of the tunnel which her early standouts Stridulum and Velusia broke into our conscious over a decade ago, being no lesser darker in its electronic gleam, but clawing their way to be made visible in it. In bringing Sunn O)))’s Randall Dunn and drummer Matt Chamberlain into her earth, ARKHON’s orchestral forces give that which we cannot see breath and beauty among collapse.
Highlights: “Lost”, “Sewn”, “Do that Anymore”
Zola Jesus’ ARKHON is available now on Sacred Bones Records.
